Solo Gigography - 1990's

90sGigography

1990 - The Fridge, Brixton, South London

Pete performed with Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny for the Showtime Coast to Coast music special hosted by Herbie Hancock, taped before a live audience at a South London club in Brixton called The Fridge.

Set List: I Put A Spell On You, Magic Bus.

March 2, 1993 - West Bank Cafe, New York

Pete sits in with the Tommy broadway musical cast and band at a private party.

"At a party for the forthcoming Broadway production of the Who's rock opera "Tommy," performers and friends are half-dancing in the basement of the West Bank Cafe while the show's leads sing "Pinball Wizard" and "I'm Free." Sitting in with the band is a middle-aged man with the short hair and bony careworn face of a penitent in a Hieronymous Bosch painting, strumming an acoustic guitar. When he steps forward to sing "Save It for Later" by the English Beat, his voice is a choirboy tenor, and as the song revs up he suddenly fixes the audience with a stare from his earnest blue eyes. The song's chorus repeats "Don't let me down" perhaps a dozen times, and he is soon singing the line with baleful sincerity, turning the phrase into a command and a plea to those who will perform "Tommy," his 1969 magnum opus. Once again, Pete Townshend had made a catchy pop song yield wrenching honesty." [New York Times review March 1993]

June 20, 1993 - China Club, New York

Pete performs at Rockers On Broadway with the Tommy broadway musical cast and band.

"In 1993, The Who’s TOMMY was preparing to open on Broadway. One day during rehearsals Pete (Townshend) approached me about doing a couple of live concerts around the city. He wanted the cast to learn what real Rock & Roll felt like, and for a bonus they could perform with him. He wanted us to have this experience for ourselves, because it would help translate that edgy rock sensibility into our performances. At Pete’s request I gathered the TOMMY orchestra and formed a band. Once the band was set, I held a company meeting with my fellow cast members and asked them to join in the fun. The first Rockers On Broadway was held in the Spring of 1993 at the China Club on 75th Street in New York City. In addition to the Tommy cast and Pete (of course), special guests included Joe Walsh, Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes) and Eddie Vedder. For me, the experience of singing ‘Pinball Wizard’ next to Pete that night changed me forever. It was extraordinary. Really, who doesn’t want to feel like a Rock Star…at least once?" [Donnie Kehr interview 2014]
